StumbleBumps Unite Sprint Blog 4
This sprint was perhaps the busiest sprint in this project so far. I was tasked with not only creating new assets for the title screens, but I also needed to create animated borders. The first task I did was create new images for the slider. This slider would be used for the volume options in the settings, and I set off to improve what I previously drew in an earlier sprint. I used similar colors prior to the previous version of the slider, but I bumped up the yellow coloring a bit, while I darkened the brown on the slider itself. I am proud of what I have created, and I only strive to see it better when I finalize it.
The second thing I worked on was to create a rough UI of the character select screen. I followed the rough wireframes provided to me, and I drew up something meant to be fun and colorful. I tried out different color combinations, drew rough versions of the icons, and I even experimented with a test of the crumpled paper that will be in the final game. In the end, I ended up with a visual that I’m proud to be improving upon the next sprint. I also hope to make the colors shine even more, and make the small icons the best that they could possibly be.
Another thing I worked on this sprint was creating the Player Number UI. This was the first time I truly experimented with a potential final look of a button. I played around with where the arrows could go, I tried out some new gradient combinations for a cleaner look, and I even added a standard border around the gradient to really sell the simple fun of the game. I am overall happy with the result, and I’m excited to experiment further with the other UI elements in this game.
The final thing I worked on this sprint was creating animated borders for the first time. While this task seemed easy at first, it was tricky to truly get down. Not only did I have to make it generally stay on the buttons, I also had to make sure the texture brush used for the borders looked sketchy, but still playful enough. After some experimenting and helpful feedback from Donovan and Micheal, I was able to create two borders. One was for the slider button, and the other was for the Player Number UI that I was working on.
In conclusion, this sprint has the most work I’ve completed so far. Things did get stressful at points, but I’m proud of pushing through. I’m also proud of what I learned in this sprint, including learning about UI presentation. In the next sprint, I’m excited to truly begin finalizing things, revising my font, and even work on the game poster. Things are turning out great for StumbleBumps Unite, and I look forward to seeing the game go the distance.
